Medical certificate to revalidate the driving licence

Who can apply for the revalidation of a driving licence?

Holders of a Portuguese driving licence who meet one of the following conditions:

  • are residents of Portugal
  • have Portuguese nationality, a driving licence initially obtained in Portuguese territory and reside in the territory of a State that is not a member of the European Union or the European Economic Area
  • are students residing in national territory for at least 185 days

When should a driving licence be revalidated?

The revalidation of the driving licence can be requested within six months prior to the expiry of the licence and must be revalidated according to the ages indicated here and here, for the different categories of vehicles, and regardless of the validity recorded in the document.

If you are a driver of vehicles from categories AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE, Mopeds and Agricultural Tractors

If you are a driver of vehicles of the categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE, as well as categories B and BE, and drive ambulances, fire brigade vehicles, patient transport, school transport, public transport of children or cars Passenger cars for hire

Where can I apply for a revalidation of my driving licence?

It is possible to renew your driving licence online or in person.

If you choose the digital route, you can access the website of the Institute of Mobility and Transport and access the services through authentication with Digital Mobile Key, Citizen Card, or Finance login. What documents do I need for the revalidation of my driving licence?

The documents required to revalidate your driving licence are different depending on the means – online or face-to-face – through which you are going to do the process:

In person:

  • Current Driver's License
  • Identification document that contains habitual residence in national territory, for example, the citizen card
  • Tax Identification Number (TIN)
  • Electronic medical certificate, which will be sent electronically by the healthcare professional, in the following situations:
    • if you are 60 years of age or older and you are the driver of vehicles belonging to categories AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, BE or agricultural vehicles of categories I, II and III
    • in any revalidation, if you drive vehicles of categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE, as well as categories B, BE if you are an ambulance driver; fire brigade vehicles, patient transport, school transport, collective transport of children or cars hired for the transport of passengers
  • psychological assessment certificate, issued by a psychologist, for drivers aged 50 years and over who drive vehicles of categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE, as well as for those of categories B, BE if they drive ambulances; fire brigade vehicles, patient transport vehicles, school transport vehicles, collective transport of children or cars hired for the transport of passengers

  • Tax Identification Number (NIF) and password of the Finance Portal to register on the website of the Institute of Mobility and Transport
  • Psychological Assessment Certificate, in cases where it applies (which you will have to scan) and/or
  • Electronic medical certificate: in this case you do not need to have it on paper, as it is submitted electronically by the healthcare professional

The medical certificate is also mandatory in any licence revalidation if you are a Group II driver (categories explained above), regardless of how the application is made. In the same group, and from the age of 50, in addition to the medical certificate, a certificate of psychological aptitude is also required.

Why do I need a medical certificate to renew my driving licence?

The obligation to issue a medical certificate to revalidate the Driving Licence came into force on 15 May 2017, through Decree-Law No. 40/2016, of 29 July, and aims to automatically register drivers' incapacities and/or restrictions and adaptations. The electronic transmission of this document is made by the health professional, through electronic means to the Institute for Mobility and Transport.

Which doctor can issue a medical certificate for a driving licence?

Medical certificates for driving licences may be issued by any doctor in the exercise of his or her profession (public or private service).

How are medical certificates issued for a driving licence?

The medical certificates are issued electronically, submitted by the doctor who passes them on to the Directorate-General for Health, and automatically transmitted to the Institute for Mobility and Transport, and there is no need to be presented, on paper, by the drivers at the time of revalidation.
