What is the male condom?

The male condom consists of an elastic pouch, shaped like a finger. It is the most widely used contraceptive method in the world. It is made of latex or polyurethane and usually comes already lubricated. It comes in various colors, scents, and sizes.

How does the male condom work?

The condom acts as a physical barrier, preventing sperm from reaching the egg, fertilizing it and giving rise to a pregnancy. It is the only method that protects against a sexually transmitted disease.

How effective is the male condom?

When used correctly, it is a highly effective method of contraception. It is less effective than hormonal methods. In a group of 100 women who used condoms correctly after one year of use, two became pregnant.

How do you use the male condom?

To use the condom correctly, you must:

  • Carefully open the package without using sharp objects
  • puts you with your penis in erection before any genital contact
  • Place it on the glans by drawing the air from the sperm reservoir
  • Hold it by the tip (reservoir), unwinding it and covering the entire penis
  • Remove the condom before you lose your erection completely and tie it in a knot (put it in the unsorted trash)

The main drawbacks of using this method:

  • It must be available at the time of sexual intercourse. Remember, however, that it's easy to access
  • It must be used correctly during sexual intercourse to be effective against sexually transmitted diseases
  • possibility of rupture during sexual intercourse
  • possibility of slipping and getting deep in the vagina

You can buy the male condom in supermarkets or pharmacies. You can also get them free of charge at health centres and some government organisations.

Prices vary depending on the brand and type of device.

Can I use lubricants with a condom?

Yes, but you should only use water-based ones.

What precautions should I take before using a male condom?

It is important to confirm:

  • the state of conservation of the packaging
  • The Certificate of Quality
  • Shelf life
  • if the condom wrappers have been in cool places away from direct sunlight

How many times can I use the same male condom?

You should use the condom only once. Each condom is not reusable.

Can I use a condom together with another contraceptive method?

Yes. Condoms can and should be used at the same time as another method of contraception (pill, intrauterine device, contraceptive implant, contraceptive patch, etc.), and this form of contraception is called "double protection"

Do I need a prescription to buy a male condom?

Nope. The condom is over-the-counter and does not require a prescription.
