What is it?

Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms of toxoplasmosis are:

  • enlargement of the lymph nodes in the neck and armpits
  • feeling unwell
  • muscle aches and pains
  • fever

How is it transmitted?

Transmission occurs by:

  • Ingestion of raw or undercooked food that contains the inactive form (cyst) of the parasite
  • after contact with soil containing eggs in cat feces

How can you prevent toxoplasmosis?

There are some measures that can prevent toxoplasmosis:

  • Wash your hands and all kitchen utensils thoroughly during food preparation, especially after handling raw meat
  • Peel and/or wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly
  • Cook food thoroughly
  • Do not drink water that is not treated
  • Wear gloves and wash your hands after gardening activities

I am pregnant and not immune to toxoplasmosis. Can I eat seafood?

yes. You can eat seafood as long as it is well cooked and freshly cooked.
