What are the different paediatric ages for the dentist's cheque?

The ages are divided into:

  • 2 to 6 years
  • 7 to 9 years old
  • 10 to 12 years old
  • 13 to 14 years
  • 16 to 18 years old

The 15-year-old consultation can be inserted in the age group of 13 to 14 or 16 to 18 years old.

How are dental vouchers used?

According to norm of the Directorate-General for Health, the use is as follows:

  • until October 31, 2021 for all children with document issuance until August 31, 2021
  • from 1 January 2022 to 31 October 2022 for children with documents issued on or after 1 November 2021

As of November 1, 2021, the issuance of dental checks and referrals for oral hygienists for children of the 2008, 2011 and 2014 birth years will also begin.

What are the conditions of the dentist's voucher from 2 to 6 years old?

According to the standard of the Directorate-General for Health, all children aged 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 years have access to preventive and curative treatment, in case of the existence of caries lesion in primary teeth (commonly called milk teeth), through the issuance of a dentist's check by the family doctor, or doctor assistant, whenever the patient does not have a doctor assigned.

To access the dentist's voucher you must make an appointment with your family doctor.

Number of dental checks you are entitled to

Children who until December 31 of each year turn 4 years old, can have access to a referral to an oral hygienist in primary health care units or are assigned up to two dentist checks, for preventive and curative treatments issued by the family doctor in the child and youth health consultation at the Health Center. Children aged 5 and 6 have access to a dentist's check.

Validity of dental vouchers

Children of intermediate ages (8.9 years) have access, through the family doctor, whenever he detects situations of caries in permanent teeth and as long as they have used the cheque before the age of 7.

Both in health centers with an oral hygienist and where this professional does not exist, the work is provided by nurses from the school health teams. Checks are delivered to the school, organized by class for class directors to give to parents.

Children aged 8 and 9 who have used the cheque at the age of 7 have access, through their family doctor, to an intermediate cheque.

  • Children under 7 years old, according to the treatment plan defined by the adhering doctor, have access to up to 2 vouchers
  • Children aged 8 and 9 have access to a cheque

Treatments to which you are entitled

Children under 7 years of age are entitled to the sealing of fissures in healthy molars and premolars and to the treatment of all cavities in permanent teeth.

Children aged 8 and 9 have access to up to 2 caries treatments on permanent teeth.

Both in health centers with an oral hygienist, and where this professional does not exist and the work is provided by nurses from the school health teams, the checks are delivered to the school. These are organized by class for class directors to deliver to parents.

14-year-olds, who have used the 13-year-old dentist's cheque, have access, through their family doctor, to an intermediate cheque.
